To Bishops from Africa:

Since our time together in Greensboro, North Carolina, earlier this month, I have continued to work on locating resources that relate to the course on Global Pentecostal Origins.  If you are reading this message by email, please go to www.pctii.org/gpo.html for further updates.

While you are in the U.S.A. it may be a good opportunity to download some of the online resources noted here and either copy them to your laptop, a flash drive, external hard drive or like device, and/or burn to cd/dvd.

Those who have access to the Internet should look for books and journal articles in my syllabus at places like http://books.google.com/ and http://www.questia.com/workspace One can find here Allan Anderson’s Introduction to Pentecostalism and other recommended books. It cost nothing to access Google Books but one cannot download such books and articles. One can start using these resources by searching according to the name of the author, title of the book or more general searches for "Pentecostal" or "Pentecostalism". In less than five minutes, I found books like a standard text on Ghana, Professor Grant Wacker's important book and Dr. Roger Robbins monograph on A.J. Tomlinson. However, it should be pointed out that if a book is still under copyright protection that one can review only part of the book online. Google refers to this as 'book preview'. If a book is in the public domain, then the entire text is available online. An example of a book in the public domain is Edward Irving's The Day of Pentecost or the Baptism with the Holy Ghost.

I am working on getting specific books as pdf files but this project may take a month if not longer. In the meantime, please look for relevant sources on my web on these pages:

http://www.pctii.org/online.html A select group of academic publications about Pentecostalism.
http://pctii.org/research.html Primary special collections around the world.
The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center provides free online access to the following periodicals: The Apostolic Faith, Bridegroom's Messenger, Confidence, Pentecostal Evangel, Refleks, and Assemblies of God Heritage.

http://www.pctii.org/academic.html Print journals, e-journals, etc.
http://pctii.org/cyberj/table.html In addition to articles specific to Africa, one can find my article on Beniah in issue #1, an article on Cashwell and A.J. Tomlinson in issue number 5, Hispanics and Azusa St. in #5, Professor Allan Anderson on apartheid in #9, etc.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, smartphone, or like mobile device, one might benefit from a search of iBooks by Apple's iTunes, Kindle Books by Amazon and Nook by Barnes & Noble plus other such vendors like Ebooks.com and Ebooks by Kobo. Please notice that purchases through iBooks can only be used on devices like iPads and iPhone but not pcs, macs or laptops. One can purchase through both iBooks and Kindle Books the New International Dictionary of Pentecostal-Charismatic Movements (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2002) which includes articles I wrote on Church of God of Prophecy and A.J. Tomlinson. As of 11/1/10, iBooks and Kindle have Pentecostal Spirituality by Steven Land. At the moment, Kindle Books has several books on Pentecostalism but there is a rumor that Apple is considering eventually selling a wide range of textbooks through iBooks. A search for "Pentecostal" in Kindle Books turns up 300 books but not all can be recommended so one should consult the bibliography in the syllabus for the course on Global Pentecostal Origins, however one can purchase here the book on A.J. Tomlinson by Roger Robins for only $11.51. Nook includes some free books from Google Books like the writings of Alma White a fierce opponent of the Azusa St. Revival.

Update on 7/26/10: It is now possible to get access to various online resources through the primarily library for Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. In order to gain access to the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) database that includes Pneuma: The Journal for the Society for Pentecostal Studies and the Journal for Pentecostal Theology.

    Go to http://search.ebsohost.com
Login: Username and Password available from Kathy Osborn in the office of Dr. Hector Ortiz
Once there, then click the link to the ATLA Religion Database with ATLA Series.

From there, the students should be able to search for articles using a combination of author’s last names and the article title. Keep in mind that for the Journal of Pentecostal Theology, volumes from 1997-2009 are available and for Pneuma, 1979-2009. I encourage students to use any relevant articles that they can find in these journals in addition to those also identified in the 50 page bibliography that is part of the syllabus.

The contents of this notice should also be of interest to Bishops from Asia who took this course during April outside Seoul, South Korea.

To God be the glory for great things He has done.

In an effort to limit some confusion, please follow instructions in the syllabus about use of the manual by Turabian for the term papers. First and foremost this means following rules for footnotes and endnotes. Also, when submitting files for assignments please name the files in this fashion: yourlastname_TermPaper or yourlastname_FinalExam.
Finally, there are consequences for not submitting an assignment on time so please take note of the deadlines designed for all concerned.

Update: The syllabus for Africa and Asia is available here. The current version is dated July 2010 and the original version was dated November 17, 2009 which was revised in late January then April 2010. Any revisions to this syllabus will be uploaded to this web with a notation about the date.

To those who need materials in French.

Please see the notice below from 3/14/10 but know that my search continues. More announcements are forthcoming, but for now please note two books at http://www.karthala.com/rubrique/liste_produit.php?id_theme=3 Another volume available here is Entreprises religieuses transnationales an Afrique de l´Quest by Lasurent Fourchard, André Mary et René Otayek. It contains chapters about Nigeria Pentecostalism and its mission to other African countries.

Dr. Wolfgang Vondey reminded me about Les Pentecotistes du Burkina Faso, by Pierre Joseph Lauren and another recent one by Albert de Surgy, Le phenomene de pentecotiste en Afrique noire, and Sandra Fancello, Les aventuriers du pentecotisme Ghaneen.

I am also trying to connect with scholars in the Congo, Cameron, and Canada.

Dear Brothers in Africa:

Greetings to the select group of God’s choice servants who recently convened at the Good News Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. May God’s peace reign in your lives.

I so very much regret that food poisoning turned my life upside down right at the moment we were to journey together. However, once back in the U.S.A., I have tried to work on how to advance our course and this first note is directed toward those whose first language is French.

First, please review the contents of the bibliography included in my syllabus sent earlier this year and available at http://www.pctii.org/gpo.html. One can find here various works in French particularly starting on page 26. Next I encourage you to go to the web for the Assemblies of God Archives at http://ifphc.org/ Use the search tool and enter keywords in French like Pentecost, Pentecostal, Pentecostalism, etc. and note the findings. This particular web will allow you to order online photocopies of given publications.

Next, I have uploaded a file here that shows part of a search accomplished through the online U.S.A. library database known as WorldCat available at http://worldcat.org/ You can do your own search but notice books in this preliminary search like those about Burkina Faso

Resources like those named above will multiply when including articles that can be grouped to count as a book for assignments like the annotated bibliography.

One final list for this communiqué shows some publications by my friend Dr. Raymond Pfister from France:

- "Perception de la Mission: Le point de vue pentecôtiste: annoncer, guérir et convertir", OEcuménisme et Mission commune des Eglises aujourd’hui. Supplément to n°138 (January 2003) of the Journal Mission de l’Eglise.

- "Pratiques missionnaires pentecôtistes et oecuménisme. Récit d’expérience d’un théologien pentecôtiste", in OEcuménisme et pratiques missionnaires. Collection Mémoire d’Eglises. Paris : Karthala, 2002.

- "Les Assemblées de Dieu en Alsace : une expression classique du pentecôtisme français", in Actualité des protestantismes évangéliques, Société, Droit et Religion en Europe (SDRE). Edited by Christopher Sinclair. Strasbourg, France: Presses Universitaires de Strasbourg, 2002.

- "Approche sociographique de l'Eglise Evangélique de Pentecôte de Strasbourg". In Aspects du Protestantisme 'Evangélique', Bulletin no. 7, 69 - 98. Edited by Jean-Paul Willaime. Strasbourg, France: Centre de Sociologie du Protestantisme, 1986.

In order for us to find our way forward, I need to get feedback about how those of you in French-speaking countries spread across Africa can locate resources like this. Do you have problems using a major university library? Can you find used book dealers? What about searching for specific titles online to locate vendors? Can you use inter-library loan as a major library near you? If the library will not cooperate, perhaps I should try to appeal to them on your behalf because they cannot discriminate against Pentecostals especially those involved in studies with an institution like Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary studying under a scholar who has published five academic titles.

Please send you responses to Dr. Harold D. Hunter at hdhpctii@gmail.com

I look forward to all of us coming back together and pray we will all travel safe and be in good health.

Dear Students:

To those in Africa and Asia who are having trouble locating resources in a timely manner, I would suggest that for now they start with my e-journal. It is known as the “Cyberjournal for Pentecostal-Charismatic Research” at http://pctii.org/cyberj/index.html If they will go to the table of contents at http://pctii.org/cyberj/table.html  they will find various articles of interest about Africa, Asia and elsewhere. They may also find other resources by viewing http://www.pctii.org/academic.html  However, most of the societies on this particular page require membership fees to pay for access to their journals. The primary society remains the Society for Pentecostal Studies at http://www.sps-usa.org/ A reference to these primary links may be found in the bibliography of my syllabus.

Let me be more precise. For Africa, I mean in particular issues #3, 9, 10, 16, 17, and perhaps 19. For Asia, I mean #1, 3, 10, 12, 15, and perhaps 6 and 13. Reading a complete issue of this e-journal (i.e. four to five articles) could be counted as equal to one minor book in the annotated bibliography. Online issues from this e-journals can make up no more than five entries on the annotated bibliography.

However, none of the online resources replace the two textbooks in the syllabus and the remaining three books must be substantive. If some countries must wait for the delivery of the textbooks, then deadlines can be adjusted. Yet it is a considerable advantage to have read the textbooks prior to hearing the lectures.

I trust this moves us forward on our journey together.

Dear Students:

In an attempt to clarify the assignment regarding an annotated bibliography, I am reproducing one such entry from a syllabus prepared by Professor Cecil M. Robeck, Jr., of Fuller Theological Seminary.

1.         Walter J. Hollenweger, Pentecostalism: Origins and Developments Worldwide (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers, 1997), 495 pp.  In many respects, Walter Hollenweger may be described as the “Dean” of Pentecostal scholars.  His doctoral dissertation at the University of Zürich consumed some 10 volumes.  In its condensed form it was published in 1972 under the title, The Pentecostals.  That volume gathered materials from Pentecostal groups around the world, many of which did not have any knowledge of each other.  He attempted to tell their theological story in a coherent outline.  This more recent volume provides a new theological conception of Pentecostalism as deeply rooted in five traditions: (1) Oral Black, (2) Catholic, (3) Evangelical, (4) Critical, and (5) Ecumenical.  Hollenweger reaps rich dividends, drawing as he does from his personal experience of Pentecostalism and his extensive experience in ecumenical circles as a former employee of the World Council of Churches (Department of Mission and Evangelism) where he was asked to study Pentecostalism. Following his time at the WCC headquarters in Geneva, Hollenweger spent two decades supervising scores of students at the University of Birmingham in England, who studied Pentecostalism in a range of cultures.  He has also drawn heavily from the findings of his students.  Always a provocateur, students will be challenged by what he says and how he says it.

For those who find this assignment a new concept, an online search of quality academic webs should provide some good advice. Each entry should aim for 150-200 words working toward a goal of 12 pages, double spaced. Students will find it an advantage to include in their annotated bibliography various works that will prepare them for the lectures, the take-home exam, and the term paper.
