ASPECTS OF LIFE IN 1898

 

The following excerpts are taken from the Voyager cd-rom The Making of America? From the Centennial Celebration of 1876 to the Great War of 1914 created and written by Roy Rosenzweig and Stephen Brier which derives from the two-volume textbook of United States history, Who Built America? Working People and the Nation’s Economy, Politics, Culture, and Society (Pantheon, 1989, 1992).

Abroad:
Spanish-American-Cuban War, lasting 112 days, is precipitated by a Feb 15 explosion that destroys the U.S. Battleship Maine in Navana harbor.
Peace protocol signed August 12 in which Spain cedes Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines (for $20 million) to the U.S.; American war dead total 5,462, most from disease.
Russia, Britain, and France obtain concessions in China; Tzu-hsi, Dowager Empress of China, seizes power and revokes reforms; Chinese Peasants mobile against westernization and Christianity.
Bubonic plague begins in China and India, killing an estimated three million over the next decade.

Politics:
Louisiana adopts "grandfather clause" in new constitution restricting black voting.
Supreme Court decides that U.W. citizenship transcends race an colo, finds the child of Chinese parents cannot be deported despite Chinese Exclusion Act.
Anti-Imperialist League founded to fight annexation of the Philippines.
Social Democratic (later Socialist) Party formed by E.V. Debs and Victor Berger.

Economy:
Marie Curie and her husband, Piette isolate radium and polonium.
German pharmaceutical company, F. Bayer & Co., introduces heroin under that brand names as a cough suppressant.

Society:
John H. Nicholson and Sam Hill found Gideons International in Wisconsin to put "Word of God" in hands of unconverted.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman argues in Women and Economics that the traditional definition of sex roles is obsolete.
